Moving into a new home can seem like an overwhelming task. Between deciding what to keep and where to keep it while you move, it can be a hectic and stressful time if you’re not prepared. Below are some tips for packing and getting rid of the extra clutter before you move into your new home.

Decluttering:

  • Donate things you no longer need or want to charity. This can be anything from old clothes to appliances, provided they’re still working.

  • Make sure you recycle as much as you can.

  • Donate books to charity. Extra books are heavy and can take up space. However, you can keep your favorites.

  • Go through room-by-room and sort your belongings by type. This way you can see what you have and if you have any excess you can get rid of. Kitchens and bedrooms are good places for this.

  • If you’re looking to get some extra cash, you can always sell your extra belongings via the Internet, a proper business, or even a yard sale.

Remove Trash:

  • Go through your kitchen and throw out expired items you may have accumulated, such as spices, canned goods, and so forth.

  • Do the same in your bathroom. Properly dispose of expired medication, cosmetic supplies, beauty tools, and cleaning supplies.

Take Your Time:

Don’t wait until the last moment to start cleaning out and packing your stuff. The more time you give yourself, the easier a time you will have. Setting aside a few hours a day to going through or packing your belongings will make the daunting task seem more manageable

Save the Mementos for Last:

Going through your kitchen appliances and getting rid of an old coffee maker is easer than deciding what treasured mementos you keep. If you save these difficult decisions for later, you can avoid getting frustrated while you clean. It can make deciding what to do with odd but highly sentimental objects easier if you have everything else taken care of.

Practical or Not?

When going through your things, it can be helpful to ask if you will ever actually use it or are just keeping it for sentimental purposes. Old clothes you haven’t worn in years? Donate them. Six spatulas? Donate some. It will help on moving costs and make you feel better about your amount of stuff.
